Our history

In 2016 Albert Goodman celebrated a milestone – 150 years in business – making the company not only one of the most successful in the South West, but the longest standing company in the region. There may have been lots of change over the years, but the ethos and focus on providing excellent client care ensure that Albert Goodman has stood the test of time and will continue to maintain a strong market position in years to come.

1866 - 1893

  • Albert Goodman founded the Taunton-based accountancy practice in Hammet Street, Taunton. He was one of the very first members of the ICAEW.
  • We became Albert Goodman & Sons, opening a London office at the start of the 20th Century.

1960's - 1990's

  • Following a series of mergers and acquisitions, we became part of Moores Rowland International.
  • Our practice prospers and as a result of several mergers and acquisitions – including with Kidsons Impey – the firm grew its footprint further to include Taunton and Yeovil.

2000 - 2008

  • In 2003 we merged to form our FCA authorised financial planning arm Albert Goodman Chartered Financial Planners and opened a Weston-super-Mare office.
  • Further boosting our Agricultural accounting expertise, we open an office at the Sedgemoor Auction Centre at Junction 24 (M5).

2010 - 2015

  • The firm expands into Dorset merging with Weymouth-based practice Coyne Butterworth Hardwicke.
  • We become one of the only firms in the South West to offer a comprehensive corporate finance service to small businesses.
  • Invited to participate in the pilot Family Business Growth Programme, assisting family businesses and farms within the South West Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) region.
  • The firm merges with T.P Lewis and Partners to establish a presence in Burnham-on-Sea.
  • Richard Bugler takes over as the firm's Managing Partner

2016 - 2019

  • The firm celebrates it's 150th birthday.
  • The firm merges with MW Medical to establish a presence in Bristol and further cement our medical / healthcare offering.
  • Albert Goodman breaks into the Accountancy Age Top 50+50 Accountancy Firms after achieving an 8.5% organic growth.
  • Albert Goodman invests in modern premises in Taunton and Weston-super-Mare to enhance the experience of their clients and staff.


  • Our staff work fully remotely for most of 2020 due to the pandemic
  • Albert Goodman is named 3rd best accountancy firm to work for in the UK
  • Two partner promotions take us to a 48% female partnership group
  • Albert Goodman awarded 'Number 1 Accountancy Firm To Work For In The UK' 2022 and came 17th best firm to work for in the South West by Best Companies.
  • Iain McVicar takes over as Managing Partner.
