A long anticipated announcement is expected from the Chancellor this evening as new measures to help the self employed are finally introduced.  Whilst House of Lords amendments to the Coronavirus Bill made provision for a payment of 80% of net earnings over the last three years to be paid to the self employed and freelancers, capped at £2,500, which would have been similar to the help given to the employed, the motion to pass this amendment failed, and the Bill was passed with no reference to the self employed.

We will have to wait until this evening to see what help the self employed may expect from the Government, but whatever the measures are, they are likely to take even more time to get in place than we are seeing for employers and employees.
